I have a subject coming in for testing that is reported to have past injury to all fingers and toes due to acid burns. He said that there has been an attempt to polygraph him in the past and the examiner ruled him unsuitable because of no GSR. My agency is not yet using disposable electrodes. Any thoughts on the best options for placement of traditional GSR in this situation? I have not yet met this man so I am not sure of the extent of his past injury. Thanks for any help.

Kipplow:

Obviously ‘self-adhesive’ sensors would be better in this case, but some potential options might be:

[1] Placing the curved finger-plates over a ‘curved’ area of the ‘fleshy pad’ just below the thumb (thenar palm area) and the other over the ‘curved area’ on the ‘edge of the hand’ below the little finger (hypothenar area) and secure with suitable body tape to ensure good contact.

[2} Researchers have found EDR is recordable on the ‘arch’ of the foot as well. You might try placing the curved finger plates over a ‘curved’ area of the arch of the foot and secure with a suitable body tape to ensure good contact.

[3] Depending on severity of finger scarring, you might consider the ‘back’ of the fingers as well.

I would also suggest practicing on yourself to ensure good contact can be acheived.

Kipplow -

The areas identified by Bob are areas used to monitor GSR for other purposes. Whether or not they would be acceptable ("approved") for polygraph is the question I would want answered.

I'm curious about how the injuries occurred. If possible, I'd contact the examiner you referred to for information about the individual and the injuries.

END.....

Yes, they are acceptable. All you need to do is find eccrine sweat glands and attach the electrodes. We use the fingers because they are the easiest, but you could tape the tips of the electrodes to the person's forehead (or even ears) and get the same results.

As far a what is "acceptable" goes, any deviation from the norm simply needs to be explained (and justified, as it would be here). The topic came up at the last regional APA seminar I attended, if you're still concerned, but there is nothing special about the fingers. As I said, they're just convenient.
